Abstract: PURPOSE: A method is provided to control the microstructure that is shown in a silicon nitride based sintered compact having a high toughness so as to solve problems such as high costs and limited application fields in manufacturing the silicon nitride based sintered compact having a high toughness. CONSTITUTION: The method for controlling the microstructure of a silicon nitride based sintered compact comprises the processes of obtaining initial raw material powder of Si3N4 having an average particle size of 0.5 microns or less; mixing the initial raw material powder with sintered materials including AlN, Y2O3 and Al2O3 in case of SiAlON sintered compact and Y2O3 and Al2O3 in case of Si3N4 sintered compact, and compression molding the mixture; and atmospheric sintering the obtained compressed powder at a temperature of 1850 deg.C or less so that the microstructure of the obtained sintered compact has a dual structure which is changed depending on the atmospheric sintering time, wherein the initial raw material powder of Si3N4 having an average particle size of 0.5 microns or less is obtained through precipitation or centrifuge method.
