    Abstract: PURPOSE: A polarization compensating panel in a projection system is provided to prevent the efficiency of polarization compensation from being deteriorated due to thermal stress. CONSTITUTION: A projection system includes a polarized beam splitter and an imager for loading an image on lights transmitted from the polarized beam splitter and reflecting the lights. A polarization compensating panel in the projection system is located between the polarized beam splitter and the imager and includes a plastic plate(QWP) and a polarization compensating panel. The plastic plate is made of polymers having birefringence such as poly carbonate and stretches the polymers to arrange molecules in one direction. The polarization compensating panel is composed of a glass plate(101) attached to both sides of the plastic plate using an optical bond(102) having a coefficient of thermal expansion smaller than that of the material of the plastic plate.

CONSTITUTION: The first green color select retarder stack(GR1) converts a green component of beam into S-wave. The first PBS(P1) reflects the green component and transmits red and blue components. The green component reflected by the first PBS is filtered while passing a polarizer(PR) to becomes pure S-wave. The green component is reflected by the third PBS(P3) to be inputted into an LCD(15G) to be changed into P-wave. The second green color select retarder stack(GR2) converts the green component into S-wave. The green component is reflected by the fourth PBS(P4) to be transmitted to a projection system(16). A red color select retarder stack(RR) converts the red component into S-wave. The red component is reflected by the second PBS(P2) to be inputted into an LCD(15R) to be converted into P-wave. The red component goes to the projection system, being in P-wave state. The blue component transmits the first PBS and the third PBS to be inputted into an LCD(15B) to be converted into S-wave. A blue color select retarder stack(BR) changes the S-wave of the blue component into P-wave.
