Abstract: PURPOSE: A method for recognizing a user authentication card in a UMTS(Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) terminal is provided to reduce a time required for recognizing the user authentication card by comparing kind information of a newly installed user authentication card with previously stored kind information of a previous user authentication card. CONSTITUTION: A UMTS terminal is turned on(301). A control unit of the UMTS terminal initializes a newly installed user authentication card(302). The control unit reads out previously stored kind information of a previous user authentication card, and transmits the first request signal including kind information of the previous user authentication card to the newly installed user authentication card(303,304). The control unit judges whether the first response signal received from the newly installed user authentication card is an error message(305,306). If the first response signal is not the error message, the control unit recognizes that the newly installed user authentication card is identical to the previous user authentication card(307). If the first response signal is the error message, the control unit transmits the second request signal including type information of a user authentication card different from the previous user authentication card to the newly installed user authentication card(308,309).
