Abstract: PURPOSE: A cavitand which selectively binds to anion is provided to be applied as a functional material for recognizing, binding, storing, transferring, and removing anions. CONSTITUTION: An urea cavitand(organic receptor) selectively binds to anions of structural formula 1. In structural formula 1, R is hydrogen, functionalized alkyl, functionalized aryl, or nitro. The canbitand is tetrakis(phenylurea) cavitand 1a or tetrakis(p-nitrophenylurea) cavitand 1b. The anion bound to the cabitand is halide, cyanide, azide, nitrate, dihydrogen phosphate, hexafluorophosphate, tetrafluoroborate, methanesulfonate or carboxylate.
