    Abstract: PURPOSE: An effective mode determining method using an adaptive Lagrange multiplier is provided to visually and rapidly encoding due to not adding a Rd-cost by determining a mode using a Mcost. CONSTITUTION: Firstly, a critical value about a 16X16 mode and a 4X4 mode is made. The critical value of 16X16 mode is defined as α and the critical value of 4X4 mode is defined as β. A block is selected as a 16X16 mode and the block is processed such as figure 2 if the block is smaller than a predicted α value. A block is selected as a 4X4 mode and the block is processed such as figure 3 if the block is smaller than a predicted β value.
