Abstract: A method for sintering a glass preform for an optical fiber comprises (a) forming a fine glass particle mass by flame hydrolysis of a glass raw material, (b) dehydrating the fine glass particle mass in an oxygen gas atmosphere contg. chlorine or chlorine compd. at such temp. that the soot preform is not considerably shrunk, and (c) heating the soot preform at a temp. that the soot preform is sintered and made transparent.
