Abstract: In the application of the single mode optical waveguide fibre such as gyroscopes and sensor, this fibre comprises a transparent core with a transparent cladding material of lower refractive index which includes on asymmetry that induces briefringence in the core. The fibre preferably comprises an oblong cross section core which has a different thermal coefficient between an oblong inner cladding of a high purity glass layer and an outer circular cross section of cladding layer of stress cladding glass. The fibre may be produced by flame hydrolysis where the core and inner cladding is collapsed to form an oblong preform which is then clad with a circular outer cladding alternatively. The outer cladding may be a preformed glass tube.
