Abstract: A phosphonate cpd. of formula (III) is prepd. by reacting a dialkyl phosphite of formula (I) with an unsaturated hydrocarbon cpd. of formula (II) in the presence of a mixed catalyst of tertiary ethylamine and trialkyl chlorosilane, and a solvent of acetonitrile or toluene. In the formulas, R is H, alkyl, phenyl, nitrile, methyl alkylate; R1 is methyl, ethyl, butyl, aryl or trimethylsillyl; X is nitrile, aldehyde, ketone, methyl alkylate or phenyl. The cpd. (III) is useful as an insecticide or a herbicide.
