    Abstract: PURPOSE: A hydroxyapatite whisker£Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2| containing Si and Mg prepared by a melting method is provided for use as reinforcement of biotissue and medical materials due to improved biological affinity compared with conventional hydroxyapatite whisker. CONSTITUTION: The hydroxyapatite whisker containing Si and Mg is characterized by substituting P for Si and Ca for Mg in the hydroxyapatite£Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2| crystal structure, wherein the amounts of Si and Mg are 0.1-5wt.% and 0.1-1wt.%, respectively. The preparation method of hydroxyapatite whisker comprises the steps of: preparing hydroxyapatite powder containing Si and Mg; adding solid flux such as K2SO4, Na2SO4, KCl, MgCl2, etc.; melting a mixture at 700-1200deg.C for 3hrs. in a high pressure vessel; washing and drying at 100deg.C. The resultant hydroxyapatite particles have a whisker shape and an aspect ratio over 5.
