Abstract: Disclosed are a device and a method for evaluating recognition performance on a variable message sign (VMS), which can operate the VMS more safely and efficiently by evaluating the recognition performance and preference on the VMS in the light of driver's emotional factors relative to the VMS. The method for evaluating the recognition performance on the disclosed VMS comprises the steps of: collecting data on target testers through an experiment which is implemented by a vehicle simulator with parameters, such as the personal characteristics of a driver and the components of the exposed surface of the VMS, and emotional factors, extracted by a data extracting part; correcting the data in the light of the measurement errors of the data collected by a recognition performance evaluating part and calculating the value of the personal characteristics of the driver, the components of the exposed surface, and the emotional factors in the light of the coefficient of correlation between the latent parameters, such as the personal characteristics, the components of the exposed surface, and the emotional factors; calculating the recognizability of the VMS through the calculation in the light of the calculated value of the personal characteristics, the components of the exposed surface, and emotional factors and the errors; and calculating the recognition performance and preference of the VMS through the calculation in the light of the calculated recognizability and the errors and evaluating the performance of the VMS based on the calculated recognition performance and preference.
