Abstract: PURPOSE: An apparatus is provided to obtain data for engine design by accurately measuring the back flow speed and back flow of exhaust gas during valve overlap. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus comprises a laser generating unit(1) for generating laser beam for measuring flow rate of back flow gas; a transmitter(2) for dividing the laser beam generated from the laser generating unit into two beams of different wavelength, supplying the beams to a laser probe(3), amplifying the scattered light produced from the laser probe through a PM tube(4), and providing the amplified light to an analyzer(5); the laser probe installed onto a cylinder head in such a manner that the laser probe is directed toward the upper surface of an exhaust valve, wherein the laser probe radiates the laser supplied from the transmitter onto the exhaust valve, receives the light scattered by the metallic particle of the exhaust gas passing through the upper surface of the exhaust valve, and provides the received light to the transmitter; the analyzer for detecting an instantaneous back flow speed of the exhaust gas by using the scattered light provided through the PM tube; an oscilloscope(6) for analyzing and indicating the instantaneous back flow speed detected by the analyzer; and a PC(7) for storing the instantaneous back flow speed detected by the analyzer.

CONSTITUTION: An adaptor comprises a laser probe(26) for radiating a laser beam; a cylindrical adaptor case(18) having a screw thread(20) formed along the lower outer periphery of the case, such that the adaptor case is screw-coupled into a spark plug mounting port formed at a cylinder head of an internal combustion engine, wherein the adaptor case has open upper and lower ends so as to allow the radiated laser beam to pass through upper and lower ends of the adaptor case; a laser beam refracting unit including a first lens(22) fixed at the upper inner periphery of the adaptor case in such a manner that the laser beam radiated from the laser probe is focused at a measuring point(28) formed within a combustion chamber, wherein the first lens refracts the laser beam radiated from the laser probe into a parallel beam, and a second lens(24) for focusing the parallel beam of the first lens to the measuring point formed within the combustion chamber; and a mounting unit for mounting and fixing the laser beam refracting unit at the adaptor case.
