Abstract: An oriented heat-treated principal film capable of thermally-induced self-forming, including one or more (co)polymers and exhibiting a relaxation temperature (T r ), the oriented heat-treated principal film having opposed first and second major faces, a land portion on the second major face and one or more modification zones on the second major face. A cross-linked (co)polymeric carrier layer is in contact with the first major face. Each modification zone includes a central closed portion and a rim portion surrounding the central closed portion and being surrounded by a land portion. An average thickness of each rim portion is greater than an average thickness of the land portion surrounding the central closed portion. An average thickness of each central closed portion is less than the average thickness of the land portion surrounding the central portion. Methods for making such films and adhesive articles comprising such films are also disclosed.

Abstract: Various embodiments of a module or apparatus for characterization of surface quality of a surface of a substrate and a system that includes such apparatus are disclosed. The apparatus includes a sensor configured to detect at least one property of the surface of the substrate or ambient environment and provide a value indicative of the at least one property, and a processor coupled to the sensor. The processor is configured to determine at least one surface quality parameter of the surface based upon the value provided by the sensor, and determine at least one processing parameter for a surface bonding application based upon the at least one surface quality parameter.

Abstract: Various embodiments of a hand tape applicator and system including such applicator are disclosed. The hand tape applicator includes a body, a spindle connected to the body that is configured to receive a tape roll that includes tape, and an ergonomic handle connected to the body. The applicator further includes a roller mechanism connected to the body that is configured to apply the tape to a substrate. The roller mechanism includes a head and a tape roller extending along a roller axis between a first end and a second end of the tape roller. The tape roller is connected to the head at each of the first and second ends. The applicator further includes a force sensor connected to the head. The force sensor is configured to detect a force between the tape roller and the head and provide a signal indicative of the force.

Abstract: The disclosed patterned wavelength-selective material and process for making the patterned wavelength-selective material uses patterned applied adhesive and a structurally weak wavelength-selective material that includes portions that contact the adhesive and break to remain in contact with the adhesive. In one embodiment, the wavelength-selective material comprises an array of sections with cuts at least partially through a wavelength-selective film at each section secured to the adhesive. In another embodiment, the wavelength-selective film comprises a transfer stack of layers.

Abstract: Wavelength-selective films are visibly apparent under the selective wavelength. Wavelength-selective films typically reflect off axis the selected wavelength and therefore can provide high-contrast against a background when applied in a pattern on a substrate. However, it is difficult to apply unique patterned embedded images from film. Disclosed is a cost-effective method and construction of a patterned wavelength-selective image to a substrate. In the disclosed wavelength-selective image, wavelength-selective film particles are applied to an adhesive pattern to create the wavelength-selective image.
