Abstract: A composite thermal barrier material for use in electric and hybrid vehicle battery packs is described herein. The composite material comprises a porous core layer, a pair of flame retardant layers disposed on either side of the porous core layer, and at least one radiant barrier layer disposed between the porous core layer and one of the pair of flame retardant layers. In some exemplary embodiments, the porous core layer is a thermally expandable layer.
