Abstract:
Diagnostic devices including a first metallic or (co)polymeric substrate, a second metallic or (co)polymeric substrate opposite the first metallic or (co)polymeric substrate, and a multilayer stack of a porous substrate positioned between the first and second metallic or (co)polymeric substrates, the multilayer stack including a multiplicity of substantially planar stacked panels of the porous substrate or a folded elongate sheet of the substrate. A multiplicity of ultrasonically-bonded regions are formed around at least a portion of the perimeter of the multilayer stack such that the first and second metallic or (co)polymeric substrates together substantially surround and encapsulate the multilayer stack. An optional compressible layer is preferably positioned between at least one of the first and second metallic or (co)polymeric substrate and the multilayer stack. The diagnostic devices are suitable for qualitative or quantitative analysis of a sample fluid. Methods of making the diagnostic devices also are described.
Abstract:
Metallic nanohole (23) arrays on nanowells (22) with a controlled depth and methods of making and using the same are provided. A mesh pattern of metallic layer (8) having an array of nanoholes is provided on an array of nanowells, aligned with the openings of the respective nanowells. The aspect ratios (D:W) of the nanowells are controlled to control the deposition of metal into the nanowells.

Sensing elements having a metallic-nanohole-array-on-nanowell structure, methods of making and using the same are provided. The sensing elements includes a mesh pattern of metallic layer having an array of nanoholes provided on an array of nanowells, aligned with the openings of the respective nanowells. The metallic layer extends into the nanowells along the sidewalls to wrap the opening of the nanowells.

A multilayer optical film includes an optical reflector and an array of discrete, spaced-apart optical bumps formed on the optical reflector. For substantially normally incident light and a visible wavelength range and an infrared wavelength range, the optical reflector may have an average optical reflectance of greater than about 30% in the visible wavelength range for at least a first polarization state, and a specular transmittance of greater than about 20% for at least one wavelength in the infrared wavelength range for each of the first polarization state and an orthogonal second polarization state. The optical bumps may have an average optical transmittance of greater than about 50% for each of the visible and infrared wavelength ranges for each of the first and second polarization states.
Abstract:
A curable mixture, a partially cured composition, a cured composition, an article containing either the partially cured composition or the cured composition, and a method of bonding two substrates are provided. The partially cured composition functions as a pressure-sensitive adhesive while the cured composition functions as a structural or semi-structural adhesive. The curable mixture can be applied to a first substrate by printing or dispensing, if desired.

A display system for sensing a finger of a user applied to the display system includes a display panel; a sensor for sensing the finger; a sensing light source configured to emit a first light having a first wavelength W1; and a reflective polarizer disposed between the display panel and the sensor. For a substantially normally incident light, an optical transmittance of the reflective polarizer versus wavelength for a first polarization state has a band edge such that for a first wavelength range extending from a smaller wavelength L1 to a greater wavelength L2 and including W1, where 30 nm ≤ L2 – L1 ≤ 50 nm and L1 is greater than and within about 20 nm of a wavelength L3 corresponding to an optical transmittance of about 50% along the band edge, the optical transmittance has an average of greater than about 75%.

A method for making a dental appliance includes depositing an image layer on a major surface of a water-soluble polymeric image carrier substrate; placing the water-soluble image carrier substrate in an aqueous liquid to at least partially dissolve the image carrier substrate; immersing into the aqueous liquid a substantially flat polymeric transfer substrate through the image layer such that the image layer transfers to a surface of the transfer substrate; and removing the transfer substrate from the aqueous liquid with the image layer bonded to the surface thereof. The transfer substrate may be formed into a dental appliance with a graphic image thereon.
Abstract:
Methods of passivating an adhesive via printing an ink onto a release liner, and adhesive articles or products made by the same are provided. An ink pattern is printed onto a release liner to form a pattern of features. The features are at least partially embedded in an adhesive layer such that when the release liner is peeled from the adhesive layer, the passivation features remain with the layer of adhesive to form selected areas having adjusted adhesive functionality. Articles including the passivated adhesive on a release liner are also disclosed.
