Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a current limiter which has a high-temperature conductor simply and at a low price. SOLUTION: To manufacture a composite conductor 1 and 3, a silver foil 1 is put on a powder layer consisting of 2mm thick MgO on one side, and it is covered with a 600μm thick green sheet containing a high-temperature superconductor powder and an organic coupling agent on the other side. After fusion of the high-temperature superconductor, a 200μm thick glass or carbon fiber/epoxy resin layer is applied by vacuum impregnation to at least one side of the composite conductor 1 and 3 for its mechanical stabilization. To manufacture a resistant current limiter, a plate-shaped current limiting element having specified layer structure is cut in meander shape and besides two layers are bonded or pressed after interposition of cooling member as occasion demands. An inductive current limiter can be obtained by bending such a flexible plate, and besides, brazing a ring gap 9 with a metallic strip 5 consisting of silver.

Abstract: In a current limiter production process involving application of a high temperature superconductor (HTSC) starting material powder onto a silver layer (1) surface and then temperature and oxygen treatment to form the HTSC (3), the novelty is that (a), prior to applying the HTSC starting material powder, the opposite surface of the silver layer is placed on a powder layer which is chemically inert wrt. the hot HTSC; and (b) a mechanical stabilisation layer (4) is applied onto at least one main surface of the composite conductor (1, 3), after forming the HTSC (3). Also claimed is a current limiter having a composite conductor (1, 3) comprising a HTSC (3) in surface contact with a non-superconductive shunt resistor of a silver layer (1) parallel to the HTSC, the novelty being that (i) the HTSC (3) has a layer thickness (d3) of less than 500 (preferably less than 300) microns, the silver layer (1) has a layer thickness (d1) of less than 25 (preferably less than 10) microns and d1/d3 = less than 1/5, preferably less than 1/10; and (ii) at least one main face of the composite conductor (1, 3) is in surface contact with a mechanical stabilisation layer (4).

Abstract: A method is disclosed for producing a non-linear powder having microvaristor particles which have a non-linear current-voltage characteristic. The production steps includes mixing non-metallic particles with the microvaristor particles, thermally treating the non-metallic particles for decomposing them into electrically conductive particles and fusing the electrically conductive particles onto the microvaristor particles. Embodiments, among other things, relate to: breaking up agglomerates of the non-metallic particles during mixing; keeping the decomposition temperature below a sintering or calcination temperature of the microvaristor particles; and choosing micron-sized or nano-sized non-conductive particles for microvaristor decoration. The production method produces varistor powder with improved reproducibility of the non-linear electric current-voltage characterstic and with reduced switching fields (Es).
