Provided are a polymerizable liquid crystal composition, a coating material, a medium, and a polarizing device each produced using a Polymerizable liquid crystal compound and a colorant and each capable of producing polarized light suitable for polarizing devices, and also a novel naphtholactam derivative, a novel coumarin derivative, a novel Nile Red derivative, and a novel anthracene derivative each suitable for use as the colorant. Specifically provided are a polymerizable liquid crystal composition containing (A) at least one liquid crystal compound having a polymerizable functional group, (B) at least one colorant, and (C) a polymerization initiator, and a novel naphtholactam derivative of formula (IV'), a novel coumarin derivative of formula (VI'), a novel Nile Red derivative of formula (VII'), and a novel anthracene derivative of formula (VIII') each suitable for use as the colorant (B).

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wavelength cut filter which has low incident angle dependence and high heat resistance and can be produced with reduced thickness.SOLUTION: A wavelength cut filter comprises a glass substrate A, a coating layer B containing a squarylium dye, and an infrared reflective film C laminated together. A transmittance of the filter preferably satisfies the following conditions (i)-(iii). (i) In a wavelength range of 430 to 580 nm, an average transmittance measured in a direction normal to the wavelength cut filter is no less than 75%. (ii) In a wavelength range of 800 to 1000 nm, an average transmittance measured in the direction normal to the wavelength cut filter is no more than 5%. (iii) In a wavelength range of 560 to 800 nm, an absolute value of a difference between a wavelength value (Ya) at which the transmittance is 80% when measured in the direction normal to the wavelength cut filter and a wavelength value (Yb) at which the transmittance is 80% when measured in a direction at 35° from the direction normal to the wavelength cut filter is no more than 30 nm.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new compound having excellent thermal decomposition properties and optical properties suitable for an optical element useful for an optical recording material for an optical recording medium for a laser beam recording and to provide an optical recording material using the compound.SOLUTION: The merocyanine compound is represented by general formula (I), and the optical recording material uses the compound. In the formula, a ring A is a nitrogen-containing five-membered ring or six-membered ring; R1 is H or a 1-10C alkyl group, a 6-30C aryl group or a 7-30C arylalkyl group; R2 is a cyano group or a 1-10C alkyl group; and R3 is H, OH, a halogen atom, a nitro group, a cyano group, a 1-10C alkyl group, a 6-30 aryl group, a 7-30C arylalkyl group, a 2-30C heterocyclic group or an amino group.
