    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of chipping, etc., and to reduce the labor and energy for the treatment of end face of tempered glass plate, by passing electric current through preheated end face in the course of the production process of a tempered glass plate, thereby melting and forming the end face. CONSTITUTION:A glass plate is introduced into the 1st heating chamber 11 of a glass heating furnace and heated at 300-450 deg.C. The heated glass plate is transferred to a temperature-maintaining chamber 12 and locally heated along the end face of the plate at a temperature higher than the other parts and lower than the softening temperature of the glass plate. High voltage is applied to plural electrodes placed close to the end face of the glass plate and interposing a gas between the electrodes. Arc discharge is generated between the end face of the glass plate and each electrode to effect the melt-forming of the end face of the glass plate between the electrodes. The treated glass plate is transferred to the 2nd heating chamber 13, heated at a tempering temperature of about 600-700 deg.C and quenched in a forced air-cooling chamber 4 to obtain a tempered glass plate.
