Abstract: PURPOSE:To control the function of pores and enhance the separation identification capability by adding water to a mixture of niobium alkoxide, silicon alkoxide and alcohol to obtain gelation and thereby forming an amorphous niobium oxide silica catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Niobium alkoxide and silicon alkoxide which are raw materials for niobium oxide and silica, and alcohol are mixed for a fixed duration, and water is added to obtain gelation. After this, the gel is dried to manufacture an amorphous niobium oxide-silica catalyst. The preferable mixing ratio of niobium and silicon is 2-100 at the atomic ratio of Si/Nb=0.5-200. In order to insure smooth mixing or gelation, alcohols are employed, and also an additive is formulated if necessary. The preferable dosage of alcohols is 1-5mol. to mol. of silicon alkoxide. The recommendable additives are 1,2-diketone, 1,3- diketone, alpha-ketone, etc.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To selectively prepare alkylnaphthalene, by mixing metal alkoxides with sulfuric ester and alcohol and adding water to the resulting mixture to gel the same to contain sulfuric acid in amorphous silica-alumina. CONSTITUTION:Metal alkoxides becoming a raw material of silica and alumina are mixed with alcohol and sulfuric ester for a definite time in a solution, and water is added to the resulting mixture to gel the same while the obtained gel is dried to prepare a sulfuric acid-containing silica-alumina catalyst wherein sulfuric acid is contained in silica-alumina. As sulfuric acid ester, dimethyl sulfate and diethyl sulfate are pref. because easy to obtain and the content of sulfuric acid is pref. 3-12wt%. As the silica raw material, lower alkoxysilane is pref. and, as the alumina raw material, aluminum methoxide is pref. By using this catalyst, the acetylation of naphthalene smoothly advances in a position selective manner.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the title sugar alcohol-silica composite made highly functional, by mixing alkoxysilanes and sugar alcohols, adding water to gel the mixture, and occluding the sugar alcohols in the amorphous silica. CONSTITUTION:Sugar alcohols (e.g., inositol) and alkoxysilanes (e.g., tetraethoxysilane) are mixed along with a solvent and a reaction accelerator, as required. From 2-30mol water is the preferably added to 1mol of the alkoxysilane to gel the mixture. The gelled material is dried at 50-100 deg.C under reduced pressure to obtain a sugar alcohol-silica composite. The obtained composite has excellent heat stability and chemical stability, and is insoluble in water. As a result, the composite can be excellently used as an adsorption and separation agent having a molecule identifying function with high selectivity, a highly functional chromatography packing agent having a long service life, and a separating and dividing agent for geometrical optical isomers.
