    Abstract: A process for the production of alumina includes a method for controlling the specific surface area of alumina. Control of specific surface area is performed by controlling the porous structure of alumina. In the process, an aluminium alkoxide is subjected to hydrolysis for forming an alumina gel. Before hydrolysis a polyether is used as an organic solvent in order to control the porous structure of produced alumina.

    Abstract: A process for preparing a cordierite, which includes dissolving a silicon compound, an aluminum compound and a magnesium compound in a molar ratio of 1:0.7 to 1:0.3 to 0.5 in a complexing agent represented by the formula R(OCH2CH2)nOH, wherein R is an alkyl group and n is an integer of 1 to 4; heating the resulting solution to bring about a ligand exchange reaction of the silicon compound, aluminum compound and magnesium compound with the complexing agent; conducting hydrolysis to form a gel; drying the gel and sintering the dried gel at 800 DEG to 1450 DEG C.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain high-uniformity alumina of a wide range in its specific surface area including controlled pores by allowing aluminum alkoxide to react with polyether, then drying and calcining the gel formed by hydrolysis of the product. CONSTITUTION:An aluminum alkoxide is dissolved in an organic solvent and allowed to react with a polyether, then hydrolyzed to obtain a gel from the sol. Further the gel is further dried and calcined to give the objective alumina. In this process, polyether is used as a solvent to control the pores of the alumina product. The reaction temperature of the aluminum alkoxide in poly ether ranges from 10 deg.C to the boiling point of the polyether, preferably from 40 to 190 deg.C. The polyether used in the process is generally represented by the formula: R1(OR2),(OR3)m,(OR4)n,OR5 (R1 is alkyl; R2 through R4 are alkylene; R5 is alkyl; 1 is integer including 1).
