Abstract: An organic ferromagnetic substance including an amorphous carbonaceous substance in mid course of graphitization prepared from an organic compound having a hydrogen/carbon ratio of 1.7 or more and a process for producing same are disclosed. Abstract: The invention relates to a novel, very economical process for the industrial production of ethylene glycol from formaldehyde and synthesis gas, i.e. a gaseous mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The process is based on a synthetic route in which a formaldehyde di-s-alkyl acetal, which is obtained from formaldehyde and a secondary alcohol, is reacted with carbon monoxide and hydrogen to give an ethylene glycol mono-s-alkyl ether, which is then hydrolyzed with water to give the desired ethylene glycol. The first reaction step of the reaction of the acetal compound is catalyzed by cobalt carbonyl as a single component catalyst, while the hydrolysis reaction is carried out using an acidic catalyst; a high yield is obtained according to the invention, which is surprising in respect of the analogous reaction of primary alkyl monoethers of ethylene glycol.

Abstract: The invention provides a novel and very economical method for the industrial production of ethyleneglycol starting with formaldehyde and synthesis gas, i.e. a gaseous mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The method utilizes the synthetic route in which a formaldehyde di-sec-alkyl acetal, which is obtained from formaldehyde and a sec-alcohol, with carbon monoxide and hydrogen to form an ethyleneglycol mono-sec-alkyl ether which is then hydrolyzed with water into the desired ethyleneglycol. The first step reaction of the acetal compound is catalyzed with a single component catalyst of cobalt carbonyl while the hydrolysis reaction proceeds with an acidic catalyst in a high yield unexpected from the similar reaction of ethyleneglycol mono-primary-alkyl-ethers.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of glycolic acid or its esters comprises reacting formaldehyde with carbon monoxide at elevated temperature under pressure in the presence of a specific amount of a specific catalyst so as to obtain polyglycolide. Hydrolysis or alcoholysis of the resulting polyglycolide-containing reaction mixture gives glycolic acid or its esters. The catalyst is selected from fluoroantimonic acid, fluorosulphonic acid-antimony pentafluoride, chlorosulphonic acid, fluorosulphonic acid, pyrosulphuric acid, dimethyl sulphate, methyl fluorosulphonate, boron trifluoride and fluoroboric acid.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing dimethyl succinate by the reaction of methyl acrylate with carbon monoxide and methanol, by which the dimethyl succinate can be produced in a high yield under a profitable condition and by which a catalyst can effectively be separated. SOLUTION: This method for producing the dimethyl succinate contains a carbonylation reaction process for reacting methyl acrylate with carbon monoxide and methanol in the presence of the solution of a complex catalyst comprising cobalt carbonyl and a nitrogen-containing cyclic compound. Therein, the gas of a liquidized hydrocarbon is added to the reaction product solution obtained in the carbonylation reaction process to separate the dimethyl succinate from the catalyst solution.
