    Abstract: The invention relates to a novel, very economical process for the industrial production of ethylene glycol from formaldehyde and synthesis gas, i.e. a gaseous mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The process is based on a synthetic route in which a formaldehyde di-s-alkyl acetal, which is obtained from formaldehyde and a secondary alcohol, is reacted with carbon monoxide and hydrogen to give an ethylene glycol mono-s-alkyl ether, which is then hydrolyzed with water to give the desired ethylene glycol. The first reaction step of the reaction of the acetal compound is catalyzed by cobalt carbonyl as a single component catalyst, while the hydrolysis reaction is carried out using an acidic catalyst; a high yield is obtained according to the invention, which is surprising in respect of the analogous reaction of primary alkyl monoethers of ethylene glycol.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a process for producing the subject ester useful as an intermediate raw material for the synthesis of functional materials, pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals in high yield. CONSTITUTION:This compound of formula II is produced by reacting 4bromoblphenyl with a phenol compound of formula I (R to R are each H, an alkyl, an alkoxy or an aryl; R and R are not sterically hindered groups at the same time) and carbon monoxide in the presence of an organic strong base (e.g. cyclic amidine or cyclic guanidine) using a palladium complex catalyst at 50-200 deg.C preferably 110-130 deg.C under carbon monoxide pressure of 1-50 bar, preferably 3-10 bar. The amounts of the phenol compound and the palladium complex are preferably 1.0-1.5mol and 0.002-0.008 mol based on 1mol of 4- bromobiphenyl, respectively. Even if the phenol compound has steric hindrance substituents on both 2- and 6-sites, the reaction is smoothly performed by using the phenol compound in the form of K salt or Na salt.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To advantageously obtain the title compound in reacting a corresponding 2,7-dibromo compound with carbon monoxide and an alcohol in the presence of a basic substance by using a palladium catalyst consisting of a specific chelate diphosphine as a ligand. CONSTITUTION:In producing a compound shown by formula I usable as an intermediate for heat-resistant or liquid crystal polymer by reacting 2,7- dibromo-9,10-dihydrophenanthrene with carbon monoxide and an alcohol shown by the formula R-OH (R is 1-20C hydrocarbon group) in the presence of a basic substance, a palladium complex consisting of a chelate diphosphine shown by formula II (A is 1-10C hydrocarbon group, preferably isopropyl, cyclohexyl or phenyl; n is 3 or 4) as a ligand is used as a catalyst to give the objective compound in much higher activity and selectivity than those of a conventional procedure using a palladium-triphenylphosphine complex as a catalyst.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce an organic oxygen-containing compound containing acetic acid, acetaldehyde and ethanol as principal components from a synthetic gas by using a cobalt catalyst comprising an oxide containing an alkali metal element carrying a cobalt-carbonyl compound. CONSTITUTION:A synthetic gas is reacted at 150-450 deg.C, 5-150kg/cm and 1000-20000/h space velocity using a specific cobalt catalyst to produce a 2C oxygen-containing compound such as acetic acid, acetaldehyde or ethanol in high selectivity. The catalyst is produced by impregnating silica gel or alumina, etc., with an aqueous solution of acetate, oxalate, nitrate or chloride, etc., of alkali metal (e.g. Li, K, Na or Rb) and carrying a cobaltcarbonyl compound [e.g., Co2(CO)8 or Co4(CO)12] with a impregnating-carrying method from a solution or a vapor phase mixing method, etc., without using a solvent. Thereby, the objective material is obtained in high selectivity without using expensive rhodium catalyst.
