Abstract: A process is provided for producing glutaric acid through oxidation of cyclopentene using a ruthenium compound oxidizing agent. The solvent for the reaction system is usually a halogenated hydrocarbon or a mixture of a halogenated hydrocarbon and an aliphatic nitrile. The oxidizing agent is added continuously or intermittently together with a co-oxidizing agent, such as sodium hypochlorite, in an aqueous alkaline solution. The process makes it possible to produce glutaric acid efficiently from cyclopentene.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain glutaric acid directly in high yield, selectivity and efficiency, by the liquid-phase oxidization of cyclopentene with a catalytic amount of a ruthenium-based oxidizing agent in a specific solvent while adding a co- oxidizing agent such as an alkaline aqueous solution directly to the reaction system. CONSTITUTION:Glutaric acid is produced by the liquid-phase oxidization of cyclopentene with a catalytic amount of a ruthenium-based catalyst such as RuCl3 in a halogenated hydrocarbon solvent such as CCl4 or a mixture of the hydrocarbon and a nitrile hydrocarbon such as acetonitrile as a solvent of the oxidizing system at 0-100 deg.C under normal or positive pressure for 0.1-10hr. The pH of the reaction system is maintained to >=11 by mixing an aqueous solution of NaClO having an effective chlorine concentration with NaOH and adding the obtained alkaline aqueous solution as a co-oxidizing agent continuously or intermittently to the reaction system. The by-produced RuO can be collected easily by filtering with celite and recovered and reused in the form of an aqueous solution of RuO2 by washing with an aqueous solution of NaClO.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for perfumery, pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, functional polymers, etc., in improved yield at a low cost by oxidizing 2,4,6-trimethylphenol with oxygen in the presence of an alcohol and a specific catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be produced by oxidizing 2,4,6- trimethylphenol with oxygen in the presence of an alcohol and a catalyst consisting of a combination of a copper compound and various nitrogen compounds selected from amines and oximes, and preferably further reacting the reaction product with a 1-8C lower aliphatic alcohol or a mixture of an aromatic hydrocarbon and a 1-8C lower aliphatic alcohol as a reactant and solvent. The amount of the oxime to be used in combination with the copper compound is 0.3-3mol per 1mol of the copper compound. The amount of the amine is preferably 1mol per 1mol of copper.
