Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the title polycondensate useful as an electrode for battery, etc., which is highly resistant to oxidation and has high carbonation yield though with a large amount of solvent-soluble portion, by subjecting an aromatic quinone and an aromatic hydro compound to condensation reaction with dehydration in the presence of polyphospheric acid. CONSTITUTION:(A) An aromatic quinone and (B) an aromatic hydro compound are subjected to condensation reaction through dehydration in the presence of (C) polyphosphoric acid to afford the aimed polycondensate. The reaction is preferably carried out by using anthraquinone, etc., as the component A and 1,4-dihydronaphthalene, etc., as the component B at 120-300 deg.C for 5-20hr in the presence of an inert gas.

CONSTITUTION:An aromatic polymer membrane is carbonized independently or in the farm deposited on a polymer porous support to form a molecular sieve carbon membrane having an extremely thin molecular sieve carbon layer having no crack or pinhole. This membrane has homogenous pores with a diameter of 10A or less and shows the permselectivity to gas and sieve action due to the size of a molecule and high separation efficiency.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a pitch having an increased MW and a high degree of carbonization and suited as a binder pitch or a matrix pitch, by condensing a pitch or a hydrogenated pitch with an aromatic quinone through dehydration in the presence of polyphosphoric acid. CONSTITUTION:A pitch or a hydrogenated pitch is condensed with an aromatic quinone through dehydration in the presence of polyphosphoric acid to obtain the purpose high-MW pitch. In this reaction, water is eliminated from the methylenic hydrogen atoms of an aromatic hydro compound present in the pitch and the carbonyl group of the aromatic quinone to form an addition compound. Since both are bonded through a double bond, thermal cleavage can hardly occur, and a high-MW heat-resistant pitch of a high degree of carbonization can be obtained. The reaction can be controlled by varying the reaction time, the reaction temperature and the concentration of phosphorus pentoxide in the polyphosphoric acid used.

Polyphenylene formed on the anode plate is washed and dried to give a polyphenylene film. Then the high polymer film is heat-treated in an inert gas and carbonized to give the aimed carbon film.
