Abstract: The methylation of a phenol in an ortho position by the vapor phase reaction of the phenol with methanol using as a catalyst a sintered mixture of ferric oxide, at least one divalent metal oxide of the general formula: MO wherein M is selected from Zn, Mg, Co., Ni, Cr and Cd, and a small amount of manganese oxide calculated in terms of manganese, up to about 1.0% by weight of said ferric and divalent metal oxides, 2,6-dimethyl phonol is a preferred product.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To liquefy coal efficiently by a ruthenium carrying metal oxide catalyst. SOLUTION: This method comprises directly hydrogenating aromatic nuclei of coal in the presence of a ruthenium-carrying metal oxide catalyst having the activity of selectively hydrogenating aromatic nuclei in a reaction zone at a temperature as low as 350-425 deg.C to produce a high-quality liquid product. The metal oxide is a compound double oxide comprising oxides of nickel, manganese, zinc and/or lanthanum. This catalyst has an excellent activity of nucleus hydrogenation under the conditions of direct liquefaction reaction. In a reaction zone at a temperature as low as 375-400 deg.C, the yields of products having a high depth of hydrogenation can be attained. A ruthenium-carrying metal oxide catalyst having a high activity of highly selective nucleus hydrogenation is provided.

CONSTITUTION:A hydrogen donative solvent such as tetralin, dihydroanthracene or dihydropyrene is added to a heavy oil fraction such as petroleum, tar sand bitumen or shale oil and subjected to hydrogenolysis reaction in the presence of a hydrogenating catalyst at 400-460 deg.C (preferably 420-450 deg.C) under 100-300kg/ cm G (preferably 100-200kg/cm G) hydrogen pressure to give a light oil fraction.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To perform a reaction with a high degree of hydrogenation under mild conditions with a small amt. of a catalyst and to increase the efficiency of coal liquefaction by using an Ru-contg. catalyst as the catalyst for coal liquefaction. CONSTITUTION:An Ru-contg. catalyst obtd. by impregnating a soln. of an Ru compd. in an org. solvent or water into the oxide or sulfide of a metal such as Fe or Zr and drying the oxide or sulfide is used as a catalyst for coal liquefaction. Coal is allowed to react with hydrogen in the presence of a solvent and the Ru-contg. catalyst at about 350-520 deg.C under about 10-30MPa pressure for about 0-90min. Liquefaction with a high degree of hydrogenation is performed under such mild conditions with a very small amt. of the catalyst.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To effectively and selectively extract and separate polar compounds such as phenols and nitrogen compounds by hydrogenating a fossil fuel such as coal or petroleum and mixing the obtained naphtha distillate with an aqueous solution of an anionic surfactant. CONSTITUTION:A fossil fuel such as coal, petroleum or tar sand bitumen is hydrogenated in a bench scale liquefaction plant and subsequently distilled. The obtained naphtha fraction is mixed with the aqueous solution of an anionic surfactant such as a sodium alkylbenzene sulfonate to readily, efficiently and selectively extract and separate polar compounds such as phenol compounds and nitrogen compounds.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the low-boiling compounds from coal and bituminous material in high efficiency and to improve the effective use of the H2 gas to be consumed, by cracking the high-boiling compounds such as preasphaltene in the coal and bituminous materials using an acid-type iron oxide catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A raw material comprising (A) 100 pts.wt. of coal and (B) 100-2,000 (pref. 150-1,000) pts.wt. of bituminous materials is reacted, using an acid-type iron oxide catalyst, at 350 - 527 (pref. 400 - 450) deg.C under a hydrogen pressure of 10 -30 (pref. 15 - 30) MPa for 30 - 90 (pref. 40 - 60) min to carry out a coliquefaction. The above-mentioned catalyst can be prepared by the following process: urea is mixed with ferric sulfate and the mixture is dissolved in water followed by heating, and the resultant precipitate is washed with water and dried, and then calcined at 350 - 750 (pref. 400 - 500) deg.C.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To enable to simultaneously prepare a carbide having a large surface area and a saccharide anhydride in a good yield by heating a cellulosic substance such as wood from the inner portion thereof by the irradiation or microwave. CONSTITUTION:A cellulosic specimen S such as wood blocks, wood chips, bagasse, paper or pulp is received in a thermal decomposition chamber A and subsequently carbonized by the irradiation of microwave (500-6000MHz) form a microwave-generating device W and, if necessary, by the simultaneous use of a heater H. The generated gas and tar are taken out from an output port B while preventing the further progress of the thermal decomposition with a microwave-shielding net D, and introduced into a tar-recovering chamber E to separate the tar containing saccharide anhydrides such as levoglucosan. Volatile components are introduced into a thermally decomposed low boiling point product-recovering chamber I and recovered.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a denitification and hydrogenating ring-opening reaction of a polycyclic aromatic compound, by using a phosphoric acid-loaded metal oxide catalyst. SOLUTION: This method for performing a denitrification and a hydrogenating ring-opening reaction of a polycyclic aromatic compound, is to perform a hydrogenation, a hetero atom removal and an aromatic ring-opening reaction of a polycyclic aromatic compound such as a liquefied coal oil, a heavy crude petroleum, etc., by using a phosphoric acid-loaded metal oxide catalyst. A method of direct liquefaction of coal, is to produce a high quality liquefied product by directly hydrogenating the aromatic compounds of the coal in low temperature reaction range of 350-430 deg.C by using the phosphoric acid-loaded metal oxide catalyst. The phosphoric acid-loaded metal oxide catalyst is a phosphoric acid-loaded manganese oxide/nickel oxide catalyst.
