Abstract: A wide-bore capillary electrophoresis apparatus (200) for analysis of analyte ions is provided. The apparatus (200) has a wide-bore capillary (204) that has a restriction zone (106) at one or more ends (208, 216). The capillary has an inlet end (208) and an outlet end (216) and an opening (118) at each of said ends. The restriction zone (106) is capable of providing fluid communication between the wide bore (102) and the opening (118) at said end. The restriction zone (106) includes a narrow bore (114) extending to the opening and a transition zone (110) providing gradual change of bore diameter from the wide bore (102) to the narrow bore (114). The apparatus (200) further has a buffer source (212) to supply buffer to the inlet end (208) of the capillary (204) and a power supply (232) for supplying power to drive buffer and analyte ions through the capillary During CE, electrodes (224, 228) provide electrical communication between the power supply (232) and the inlet end (208) and the outlet end (216) to apply a voltage differential between said ends.
