Abstract: Apparatus for performing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) includes a reaction chamber, designed to hold 1-500 micro l of fluid, and is made of a material (A) that is thermally, chemically and mechanically stable under PCR conditions. Apparatus for performing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) includes a reaction chamber, designed to hold 1-500 micro l of fluid, and is made of a material (A) that is thermally, chemically and mechanically stable under PCR conditions. It comprises the chamber, defined by at least two internal surfaces; device for introducing PCR components into the chamber; device for removing PCR products from the chamber and device for controlling temperature in the chamber. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) microreactor for amplifying DNA by PCR including a substrate (33) and covering plate (43) that, under PCR conditions, are stable and resist biological growth; (b) method for performing PCR, to amplify DNA in a sample, using a microreactor made of (A) and having one or more reaction chambers that hold 1-500 micro l of fluid; and (c) method for amplifying the amount of a specific DNA present in a small volume of sample fluid.
