Abstract: A packaged bearing unit (12) includes an outer surface for receiving an aircraft landing gear wheel (10) and an inner surface for receiving an axle (14). The unit may comprise first and second spaced-apart sets (18a), b of tapered roller bearings, held between inner and outer raceways (20, 22). There may be a bearing setting spacer (52) which can be used when setting and pre-loading the bearings. The bearing unit may (12) be a sealed unit which includes a preset amount of lubricant (grease 50) for lubricating the bearings. One or more sensors (56, 58) may be retained in a void (54) between the sets of bearings (18). The bearing unit (12) may remain fixed to the axle (14) when the wheel (and optionally brake packs 28) are removed. The bearing unit (12) may be serviced less frequently than the wheels (10), and may thus have a longer lifetime, possibly comparable with the lifetime of the major components of the landing gear.

Abstract: Disclosed is an assembly comprising a bearing having an axis of rotation, and a fibre-based sensor for sensing strain or temperature of the bearing. The sensor extends in a direction parallel to the axis of rotation. Also disclosed is an aircraft system comprising a wheel supported on an axle by a first bearing and a second bearing. The system further comprises a first fibre optic sensor for sensing a strain or temperature of the first bearing, a second fibre optic sensor for sensing a strain or temperature of the second bearing, and an interrogator to analyse optical signals from the sensors to determine differences in the strains or temperatures of the first bearing and the second bearing.
