Abstract: An optical strain gauge system measures strain on the exterior surface of a pipe to identify areas of wear on the interior surface of the pipe. The optical strain gauge system comprises an optical sensing interrogator and at least one optical fiber. The optical sensing interrogator comprises a light source and a light sensor. The at least one optical fiber includes fiber Bragg gratings along the length of the optical fiber. The optical fiber is arranged on the exterior surface of the pipe with the fiber Bragg gratings forming a two- dimensional array of points at which strain measurements are obtained. The two- dimensional array of strain measurement points provides an accurate assessment of the strains on the exterior of the pipe which can be used to identify areas of wear on the interior surface of the pipe.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a system, apparatus and method directed to detecting damage to an optical fiber of a medical device. The optical fiber includes core fibers including a plurality of sensors configured to (i) reflect a light signal based on received incident light, and (ii) change a characteristic of the reflected light signal based on experienced strain. The system also includes a console having memory storing logic that, when executed, causes operations of providing receiving reflected light signals of different spectral widths of the broadband incident light by one or more of the plurality of sensors, processing the reflected light signals to detect fluctuations of a portion of the optical fiber, and determining a location of the portion of the optical fiber or a defect affecting a vessel in which the portion is disposed based on the detected fluctuations. The portion may be a distal tip of the optical fiber.

Abstract: A garment for real time detection of body deformation during an image scan includes a front portion, made of a compression material and having a plurality of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The garment includes a plurality of light emitters, each light emitter configured to pulse light waves through a corresponding FBGs and a plurality of light sensors, each light sensor attached to a corresponding FBG and configured to receive pulsed light waves. A processor obtains data through a data acquisition module configured to receive from the light sensors peak wavelengths reflected by the FBG Based on the effective shifts of the Bragg wavelengths of the FBGs aligned along the cartesian coordinate system, the processor may correct acquired image data or re-direct an external beam treatment to compensate for body deformation during an image scan.
