    Abstract: A method and corresponding apparatus are provided for configuring a wireless network comprising a plurality of nodes to mitigate effects of an external interference source. A subset of nodes of the plurality of nodes are configured to simultaneously participate in an external interference sampling process in which each node of the subset of nodes samples signals received by an antenna array of that node. A measurement report, comprising a signal source angle and a received signal strength, is received from a node. A location of the external interference source is firstly estimated using the measurement report received from the node. The external interference source is then characterised using the estimated location of the external interference source and the received signal strength to calculate for the externalinterference source at least one of: a source power; a beam width; an antenna bearing; and a front-to-back transmission ratio. Finally the plurality of nodes are configured to mitigate the effects of the external interference source in dependence on a result of the characterising step.Characterising the external interference source may comprise performing a characterisation particle filter process using a particle filter algorithm.

    Abstract: An antenna configuration system comprises a rotatable antenna assembly configured to employ a transmission beam pattern selected from a plurality of transmission beam patterns; a controller to rotate the assembly to each of a multiple selected azimuth directions; signal quality metric determination means for each of the selected azimuth directions and transmission beam determination means to determine an output beam pattern and an output azimuth direction; the controller being arranged to rotate the antenna apparatus to the output azimuth direction and to employ the output beam pattern for a subsequent communication involving at least one wireless terminal. The assembly may rotate, at regular intervals, through a three hundred and sixty degree range. A level of service priority weighting for at least one wireless terminal may also be used in determining the output azimuth direction and the output beam pattern for a subsequent communication. A weighted harmonic mean process may be used in the system. Extrapolated data may be used in the determining process. The system may be used in a backhaul network coupling to a core network. The system may provide an efficient self configuration arrangement which can establish optimal quality communication links.

    Abstract: An antenna apparatus 50 comprising a directional antenna with a plurality of antenna array elements 55-57 connected to a transceiver with circuitry 64 which alters the beam pattern, where the circuitry 64 is shared between at least two array components. The radio frequency circuitry 64 sequentially connects array components, alters phase or gain and combines the outputs of these operations. The gain altering circuitry may provide fixed or variable gain and further summation circuitry may be provided between the switching and phase shift stages. The phase shifting circuitry may comprise a plurality of fixed length phase paths. The antenna apparatus may comprise a directional uniform linear antenna which is rotationally positioned about a mount 62 and an omni-directional uniform circular antenna array 59-61 with time multiplexing to control operation of both antennas. A set of beam patterns provide a range of directionality and interference nulling options. The aerials may provide point to point or point to multi-point operation in a wireless network.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a channel selection controller and method for establishing a wireless link connecting a central terminal and a subscriber terminal of a wireless telecommunications system, at least two frequency channels being provided over which said wireless link could be established. The channel selection controller comprises: a storage for storing data identifying the at least two frequency channels; a selector for selecting a frequency channel from those listed in said storage; and link acquisition logic for establishing a wireless link on the frequency channel selected by the selector. Further, the selector is responsive to the link acquisition logic being unable to establish said wireless link, to select an alternative frequency channel from those listed in said storage.

    Abstract: A rotatable antenna apparatus 10 comprises antenna signal processing means 35 mounted on a thermally conductive shaft 40 which is thermally coupled between the components of the signal processing means 35 and a heat sink 50 located within a fixed location relative to the rotatable shaft 40. An antenna assembly 30 is coupled to the signal processing means 35. A thermally conductive coupling structure 45 may be provided between the components and the shaft 40 which may include an elongate member which extends into a recess in the shaft and into a recess within a component interface structure 45. The component interface structure 45 may be formed in two parts which are connected together to sandwich a portion of the elongate member. A thermal paste may be applied between the elongate member and the component interface structure 45. The elongate member may comprise a heat pipe. A heat pad may be used between the one or more components and the component interface structure 45. The shaft 40 may be thermally coupled to the heat sink 50 by a cooling fluid located within recesses and splines formed between the heat sink 50 and the shaft 40. The apparatus may provide efficient heat removal from a rotating antenna apparatus which is sealed from its external environment.

    Abstract: In order to improve the accuracy of determining the orientation of a body using GPS or another satellite or terrestrial positioning system, a location receiver which receives a RF signal is rotated or revolved around a circular path about an axis. A sensor provides an angle of the location receiver about the axis from a known reference point. The location receiver determines its position or the position of an associated antenna, which may be low-pass filtered. Using a cost minimizing function and/or correlation, calculation circuitry produces an output value indicative of an absolute bearing of the known point about the axis, based on a plurality of given angles of the location receiver about the axis from the known point, and a plurality of associated locations of the location receiver indicated by the signal received when the location receiver is at each of the given angles. The tilt of the body may also be determined.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a subscriber terminal for communicating over a wireless link with a central terminal of a wireless telecommunications system, the subscriber terminal comprising a first signal processing unit associated with an antenna to transmit and receive signals over the wireless link at first frequencies within an operating frequency band. The first signal processing unit comprises a frequency converter for converting signals between said first frequencies and a second frequency. Further, a second signal processing unit is provided remote from the first signal processing unit and associated with an item of telecommunications equipment to pass signals between said item of telecommunications equipment and the first signal processing unit. The second signal processing unit is formed from signal processing circuitry which is independent of the operating frequency band, the signals being passed between the first signal processing unit and the second signal processing unit at the second frequency via a connection medium connecting the first and second signal processing units. Given this approach, the second signal processing unit can then be formed from signal processing circuitry which is independent of the operating frequency band.

    Abstract: A node 120 is configured to operate in a wireless network by performing a coarse granularity scan to detect one or more donor nodes 110a of the wireless network according to a first metric. A connection to a selected donor node is made. The connection is broken as a consequence of the coarse-granularity scanning process being performed by the node. The node also performs a fine granularity scan in order to determine a configuration in which a quality of the connection is improved according to a second metric. The connection is maintained by the node during the fine granularity scanning process. The first and second metrics may comprise one or more factors relating to radio characteristics of the connection such as Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP), Signal to Interference and Noise ratio (SINR) and/or spectral efficiency. Scanning may be performed by rotating a motor driven antenna, or by beamforming an antenna array.

    Abstract: A method and corresponding apparatus are provided for network configuration selection in a wireless network comprising a plurality of nodes. A subset of nodes of the plurality of nodes are configured to simultaneously participate in a sounding process, in which a node of the subset omni-directionally transmits a predeterminedsignal and in which other nodes of the subset of nodes sample the predetermined signal as received by an omni-directional antenna array of that node. Measurement reports are received from the subset of nodes, each measurement report comprising a signal source angle and a received signal strength. A path loss is determined in dependence on each measurement report to generate a set of path losses covering a plurality of transmitter node receiver node pairs. Then a directional configuration is selected for a directional antenna of each node of the subset of nodes to use in data transmission in dependence on the set of path losses.
