Abstract: A multifocal ophthalmic lens includes an ophthalmic lens having an anterior surface and a posterior surface and a diffractive element disposed on at least one of the anterior surface and the posterior surface. The diffractive element includes a plurality of annular diffractive steps and four consecutive diffractive orders. The ophthalmic lens produces a near focus, an intermediate focus, and a distance focus each corresponding to a different one of the four consecutive diffractive orders. The plurality of annular diffractive steps of the diffractive element are configured such that one of the four diffractive orders is suppressed and at least a portion of the energy associated with that suppressed diffractive order is redistributed to one of the near focus, the intermediate focus, and the distance focus.

The first spherical aberration and the second spherical aberration are provided such that the first focus has a first focus spherical aberration and the second focus has a second focus spherical aberration. The first focus spherical aberration is opposite in sign to the second focus spherical aberration.

Abstract: An ophthalmic lens includes an optical filter operable to filter out at least visible light having a wavelength less than 450 nm. The lens also includes a first diffractive structure adapted to produce a focus for visible light in a first wavelength range above 550 nm and to reduce longitudinal chromatic aberration to less than one diopter for incoming visible light in the first wavelength range. The lens also includes a second diffractive structure outside the first diffractive structure in a radial direction and adapted to produce a focus for visible light in a second wavelength range between 450 nm and 550 nm. The second diffractive structure is also adapted to reduce longitudinal chromatic aberration for incoming visible light in the second wavelength range to less than one diopter while allowing longitudinal chromatic aberration in the first wavelength range in an amount greater than the first diffractive structure.
