    Abstract: Thermoplastic polyhydroxyethers having an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0.30 in dioxan at 25 DEG C. are prepared by reacting 1,4-bis(p-hydroxycumyl)benzene and epichlorohydrin in a molar ratio of between 1:1.02 and 1:1.07 in the presence of an alkali. The reaction may be performed in solution and in the presence of small amounts of water. The polyhydroxyethers may be cured by curing agents such as toluene di-isocyanates.

    Abstract: Resins are obtained by the reaction of 1,4-bis (p-hydroxycumyl)benzene or 1,3-bis(p-hydroxycumyl) benzene with an epoxide resin prepared from 2,2-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)propane and epichlorohydrin. The products may have either phenolic or epoxy end groups and, in a modification, resins with epoxy end groups are prepared by reacting the resins having phenolic end groups with epichlorohydrin in the presence of sodium hydroxide. The products are soluble in acetone and dioxan and may be cured by conventional curing agents such as diethylenetriamine, tolylene di-isocyanate, and phthalic acid. An urea-formaldehyde resin may be added as a plasticizer. For the purposes of comparison similar resins are prepared using, in place of the bis(p-hydroxycumyl)-benzenes, 2,2-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)propane. The resins of the invention are useful in coating steel.ALSO:Films are cast on "Bonderized" (Registered Trade Mark) steel panels using composition of terpolymeric polyether resins obtained by reacting an epoxide resin derived from 2,2-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)propane and epichlorohydrin with 1,4- or 1,3-bis(p-hydroxycumyl)benzene and a curing agent. The curing agent may be diethylenetriamine or tolylene di-isocyanate. The resin may be dissolved in an organic solvent such as acetone. The coating may be cured by heating.

    Abstract: Heat curable compositions comprise (A) chlorinated polyethylene having a chlorine content of 20 to 45 weight per cent and an intrinsic viscosity of 1.0 to 6.0 in o-dichlorobenzene at 100 DEG C., said chlorinated polyethylene having been prepared by chlorinating a linear high density polyethylene having an average molecular weight of 100,000 to 5,000,000; and (B) as vulcanizing agent a polyamide of a dimerized drying oil acid with an aliphatic diamine, said polyamide containing free amino groups and having an amine value of 50 to 250. The polyamide may be derived from dimers of soya bean, corn, linseed, tung and perilla oil acids and ethylenediamine, hexamethylenediamine and tetramethylenediamine. The compositions may also comprise fillers, e.g. carbon black, hydrated silica, titanium dioxide, magnesium silicate, aluminium silicate, calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, calcium sulphate, iron oxides, barium sulphate, asbestos and animal fibres; and heat stabilisers, e.g. organic complexes and salts of barium, cadmium, tin, zinc and sodium. The compositions may be moulded and cured at elevated temperatures to form gaskets, hose, footwear, belting and container linings. Examples describe compositions comprising chlorinated polyethylenes and polyamides derived from linoleic acid dimer and ethylene diamine.
