    Abstract: A gamma titanium aluminide alloy has a composition consisting essentially of the formula Ti-AlaCrbNbcSid, where "a", "b", "c" and "d" are in atomic percent, "a" ranges from about 44 to about 48, "b" ranges from about 2 to about 6; "c" ranges from about 2 to about 6 and "d" ranges from about 0.5 to about 1.0. The alloy is castable into molds containing fine detail and sharp angle. Molded parts composed of the alloy exhibit excellent strength and toughness.

    Abstract: A gamma titanium aluminide rotor is produced from an alloy consisting essentially of the formula Ti-AlaCrbNbcSid, where "a", "b", "c" and "d" are in atomic percent, "a" ranges from about 44 to about 48, "b" ranges from about 2 to about 6, "c" ranges from about 2 to about 6 and "d" ranges from about 0.5 to about 1.0.     Abstract: An apparatus for melting and rapid solidification casting of metal alloys has a crucible (2) for molding a metal charge. The crucible has side walls (3), a top (7) and a bottom (20) having an orifice (5) therein. Collectively, the side walls, top and bottom define an interior of the crucible. A portion of the dimensions of the side walls and bottom is divided by longitudinal slits (11) into at least two segments. A nozzle (8) is disposed partially within the crucible and extends through the orifice. The nozzle has a first end (24) in communication with the interior (22) of the crucible. A second end (26) of the nozzle has a nozzle orifice (28) therein for defining a stream of molten metal alloy. A cooling mechanism (4) cools the top, side walls and bottom of the crucible. The apparatus has mechanisms (30, 32, 34) for inducing alternating electrical currents within the metal charge and within the nozzle, and for establishing and maintaining pressure within the interior of the crucible. A positioning mechanism (10) positions the crucible and nozzle means relative to a quenching mechanism (36) that includes a rapidly moving chill substrate. The crucible, nozzle and quenching mechanism are housed within an enclosure (1) that provides therewithin a controlled atmosphere having positive or negative pressure.

    Abstract: Une pièce complexe, composée d'un alliage métallique à base de magnésium solidifié rapidement, est produite par formage superplastique à une température comprise entre 160°C et 275°C et à une vitesse comprise entre 0,00021 m/s à 0,00001 m/s, de façon à améliorer sa mouillabilité et à permettre son formage à des températures inférieures. L'alliage à base de magnésium solidifié rapidement contient des phases intermétalliques de terres rares de magnésium et d'aluminium finement dispersées et à granulométrie fine. Lorsqu'elle est formée, la pièce présente une bonne résistance à la corrosion ainsi qu'une résistance élevée à la rupture par traction et une bonne ductilité à température ambiante, propriétés qui, combinées, sont de loin supérieures à celles des alliages au magnésium traditionnels. Une telle pièce est appropriée pour servir d'élément de structure dans des hélicoptères, des missiles et des cellules d'avion où une bonne résistance à la corrosion alliée à une solidité et une ductilité élevées est importante.
