An electrolytic cell apparatus, for the continuous measurement of the fluoride activity of an aqueous acidic fluoride containing solution, as described in the parent Specification is modified by the addition of a second inert electrode 8 (as shown) provided to facilitate cleaning of the measuring electrode 7. During a measuring operation a p-type silicon anode 6 and the first inert platinum electrode 7 acting as a cathode, are connected to a D.C. source 9. A time switch arrangement 13 disconnects the supply from measuring electrodes 6, 7, for about 10 secs. in each half-hour operation, and connects the D.C. voltage across electrodes 7, 8, so that the electrode 7 is now positive and gas will be evolved thereat which tends to break up and carry away any objectionable film thereon. The sample of liquid under test is pumped continuously through the U-tube cell by a pump 4 from, for example, a metal treating bath 1.
