Abstract: A process is disclosed for preparation of purified terephthalic acid containing 200 ppmw or less of p-toluic acid. A filter cake of purified terephthalic acid is prepared by filtering, under a differential pressure of about or greater than 0.5 psi over the system pressure and a temperature within the range of from about 100 DEG C to about 205 DEG C, an aqueous slurry of purified terephthalic acid containing a solution of p-toluic acid. The aqueous solution of p-toluic acid remaining in the filter cake of purified terephthalic acid is displaced from the filter cake by water under a pressure gradient over the system pressure at a temperature within the range of from about 100 DEG C to about 205 DEG C. Pressure flash evaporation of water remaining in the filter cake occurs upon release of the system pressure to lower pressure with consequent lower temperature. The crystalline terephthalic acid product containing 200 ppmw or less p-toluic acid can be dried under atmospheric pressure. Purified terephthalic acid is useful for the manufacture of polyesters from which clothing and related goods are made.

Abstract: Procédé permettant de préparer de l'acide téréphtalique purifié contenant au maximum 200 parties en poids par million d'acide toluique-p. Pour ce faire, on prépare un gâteau de filtration d'acide téréphtalique purifié en filtrant, dans des conditions de pression différentielle dépassant d'environ 0,5 psi ou plus la pression du système, et à une température comprise entre environ 100 °C et environ 205 °C, une pâte aqueuse d'acide téréphtalique purifié contenant une solution d'acide toluique-p. La solution aqueuse d'acide toluique-p restant dans le gâteau de filtration d'acide téréphtalique purifié est déplacée dudit gâteau de filtration par de l'eau soumise à un gradient de pression qui est supérieur à la pression du système, à une température comprise entre environ 100 °C et environ 205 °C. L'évaporation ultrarapide par la pression, de l'eau restant dans le gâteau de filtration se produit lorsqu'on libère la pression du système pour réduire la pression en fonction d'une température plus basse. Le produit d'acide téréphtalique cristallin contenant au maximum 200 parties en poids par million d'acide toluique-p peut être séché dans des conditions de pression atmosphérique. L'acide téréphtalique purifié permet de préparer des polyesters utilisés pour fabriquer des vêtements et des articles similaires.
