Abstract:
The invention provides a method for organizing information in a computer system, particularly one having a graphical user interface which includes graphical representations of documents. In the method of the invention, the user creates a pile (or collection of documents) by positioning the cursor (for example, a pointer) over one graphical representation of a document and then selecting that document and moving the graphical representation of the document (by moving the cursor) over to another graphical representation of another document and then depositing the first document on top of the second document in order to create a pile. The system will typically display a graphical representation of the pile which is different than the graphical representation of each document separately and after a pile is created, the original graphical representation of each document in the collection will typically no longer be displayed. A sideways view of the graphical representation of the document replaces the original graphical representation of the document, and the sideways view of the graphical representation is located in the graphical representation of the collection. The user may then browse through the pile by positioning the cursor at an item in the pile for a predetermined period of time to reveal a proxy within a viewing cone for the item positioned under the cursor. After the user creates a pile, the system may display a base (or plinth) under the pile to further indicated to the user that the collection of documents is a pile and to allow the user to select the pile as a group. The user may then select the pile for further action by pointing the cursor to the base of the pile.
Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a filing system capable of composing information into a document collection and equipped with a graphic interface for supporting such kind of composition. SOLUTION: This filing system can automatically divide a pile 56 of a document collection (for instance, a document collection from an e-mail network) into sub-piles based on the contents of the respective documents in the pile. In addition, the filing system can automatically file a document into an existing pile in the computer system based on consistency of similarity between the content of the document (for instance, internal expression) and the content of the existing pile (for instance, internal expression) in the computer system by a request of a user. Additionally, the filing system can create a pile 56 from a sample document by using the internal expression of the document as the internal expression of the the new pile. Abstract:
A method and apparatus for organizing information in a computer filing system. The method and apparatus include the creation of a pile (23) comprising a collection of documents and displaying a graphical representation of the collection of documents. The method and apparatus further include browsing the collection of documents (53) by pointing a cursor (21) at a particular item in the collection of documents (53) to reveal an indicia (50) for the particular item in the collection of documents. The filing system can automatically devide a pile (23) (e.g. a collection of documents from an electronic mail network) into subpiles on the basis of the content of each document in the pile, and the filing system, at the user's request can automatically file away documents into existing piles in the computer system on the basis of a similarity match between the content (or other internal representation) of the document and the content (or other internal representation) of existing piles in the computer system. The filing system can also create a pile (23) from a sample document by using the internal representation of the document as the internal representation of the new pile. The computer filing system provides various interfaces in connection with piles to the user of the system to provide feedback and other information to the user, including information concerning the documents and piles in the computer's filing system.
