Abstract:
PURPOSE: Intelligent download of application programs is provided to enable a remote application repository to supply an identical webpage to different clients efficiently. CONSTITUTION: An application distribution system(100) includes an on-line media repository(102) that couples to a network(104) so as to allow a plurality of computing devices(106) to interact with the on-line media repository. The on-line media repository can be implemented by a single server computer or distributed over multiple server computers. In one implementation, the network can refer to one or more data networks, typically, high data-bandwidth networks, namely, wired networks, such as the Internet, Ethernet, gigabit Ethernet, and fiber optic. The on-line media repository stores a plurality of application programs(108). In order to distribute the application programs from the on-line media repository in an improved manner, the on-line media repository stores SDRs(Supported Device Requirements)(110) for some or all of the application programs. The supported device requirements can be defined by the developer and provided to the on-line media repository when providing the application program. The supported device requirements pertained to minimum device requirements that any computing device must have in order for the application program to properly operate on the computing device.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide improved techniques for controlling delivery (e.g., download) of application programs from a remote application repository to different client computing devices. SOLUTION: Application programs are often built to operate on computing devices that have certain hardware capabilities. Hence, application programs available for download from the remote application repository might not be suitable for execution on all client computing devices that are able to access the remote application repository. The improved techniques for controlling delivery can operate to permit the application programs to be received by only those client computing devices that have the required hardware capabilities to properly operate the application programs. PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved system, device and method for accessing locked features of digital products with assistance from a product distribution site.SOLUTION: A digital product can be submitted to a product distribution site for network-based distribution. The digital product can be initially provided such that it provides base functionality but contains one or more locked features. If the locked feature is unlocked, the base functionality can be supplemented. If the digital product that has been submitted is approved, the digital product becomes available at the product distribution site such that users can search, browse and purchase the digital product. Once the digital product has been purchased, downloaded and installed on a user's computing device, the user is able to utilize the digital product.
