Abstract: Disclosed herein are systems, methods, and non-transitory computer-readable storage media for associating an application for installation on a computer with a user account on an online store. A system configured to practice the method presents an application available for download, receives from a client device a software adoption request including an identifier associated with a user account and a proof of entitlement associated with a software package or the user account, verifies the proof of entitlement by comparing the proof of entitlement to a database, and if the proof of entitlement is verified, adopts the software package as part of the user account.

Abstract: A server 240 verifies that an application 261, installed on a client device 260, is eligible for adoption to a user account 291 by determining that the application is configured for distribution by the server. The server verifies that the application has not been previously adopted, including: automatically retrieving a unique identifier of an individual copy of the application from metadata associated with the application; and verifying that the unique identifier has not been associated with any user account. Preferably, the unique identifier is a proof of entitlement to the individual copy. A notification is delivered from the server to the client device that the installed application is eligible for adoption and the server may adopt the application to the user account, configuring the account to permit privileges regarding the application to one or more client devices associated with the account. The privileges may include downloading, re-downloading and updating the application. A second client device 270, 280 may be registered to the account and the adopted application transmitted thereto 271, 281.
