Abstract: Antenna structures or an electronic device 10 comprise conductive members of a resonant antenna element where parasitic coupling 336 is present. The parasitic coupling 336 may be between a second antenna 40W resonating element 306 and a first antenna 40F resonating element 108 and/or an inductor 214 of a split return path from a first antenna element 108 to a ground member 104 terminals 204. The antenna structures may comprise multiple antennas which may include an inverted- F antenna as a first antenna 40F element and an additional antenna as a second antenna 40W resonating element. The antenna elements may be formed from portions of the peripheral conductive electronic device housing structure present at either end of a device 10, including, for example, a display bezel. A conductive portion of a device’s display may be used to form at least a portion of an antenna ground member. Impedance matching circuitry may be used within the antenna structures. The second antenna 40W may be formed in a cut-out region of a ground member 104. The structures may be formed from various metals and dielectric materials and may provide a compact, efficient and detuning resistant antenna for electronic devices.

Abstract: An electronic device may be provided with a dielectric cover layer, a dielectric substrate, and a phased antenna array on the dielectric substrate for conveying millimeter wave signals through the dielectric cover layer. The array may include conductive traces mounted against the dielectric layer. The conductive traces may form patch elements or parasitic elements for the phased antenna array. The dielectric layer may have a dielectric constant and a thickness selected to form a quarter wave impedance transformer for the array at a wavelength of operation of the array. The substrate may include fences of conductive vias that laterally surround each of the antennas within the array. When configured in this way, signal attenuation, destructive interference, and surface wave generation associated with the presence of the dielectric layer over the phased antenna array may be minimized.

Abstract: Antenna structures at a given end of an electronic device may include antenna structures that are shared between multiple antennas. The device may include an antenna with an inverted-F antenna resonating element formed from portions of a peripheral conductive electronic device housing structure and may have an antenna ground that is separated from the antenna resonating element by a gap. A short circuit path may bridge the gap. The short circuit path may be a split return path coupled between a first point on the inverted-F antenna resonating element arm and second and third points on the antenna ground. The electronic device may include an additional antenna that includes the antenna ground and metal traces that form an antenna resonating element arm. The antenna resonating element arm of the additional antenna may be parasitically coupled to the inverted-F antenna resonating element and a portion of the split return path.

Abstract: A millimetre wave electronic communication device 10 comprises a dielectric cover layer, a dielectric substrate having a surface mounted against the dielectric cover layer, and a phased antenna array on the dielectric substrate wherein the phased antenna array comprises conductive traces. The phased antenna array is configured to transmit radio-frequency signals between 10 GHz – 300 GHz. A second aspect comprises the dielectric cover layer forming a quarter wave impedance transformer. A third aspect comprises a plurality of conductive trace antennas attached to the dielectric housing wall and a fence of conductive vias extending through the substrate, laterally surrounding each antenna trace. The phased arrays may comprise patch elements and parasitic elements.
