Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for reconstructing images from data obtained from scintillation events occurring within a projection space of a depth-of-interaction positron emission tomography system. The method includes the steps of identifying a segment of each depth-of-interaction detector of respective pairs of depth-of-interaction detectors detecting the scintillation events of the data obtained within the projection space and estimating a set of sinograms from the data based upon a set of depth-independent point spread functions of the identified segments of the respective pairs of depth-of-interaction detectors.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for reconstructing a tomographic image using the parallel beam filtered back projection algorithm from sampled (12) fan beam data. The method includes the steps of performing a fast Fourier transform on the fan beam data with respect to a set of projection angles, and forming a linear combination of complementary data elements of the transformed data, lying at opposite projection bins. The method further includes the steps of linearly interpolating (18) the linear combination to obtain a regularly spaced set of data in Fourier space and performing an inverse Fourier transform on the linearly interpolated data. Finally, the method includes the step of reconstructing an image for a display (20) from the inverse transformed data using the filtered back projection algorithm.
