Abstract: AQUEOUS EMULSIONS OF WATER-INSOLBLE HORTICULTURAL CHEMICALS, SUCH AS WATER-INSOLUBLE PESTICIDAL, FUNGICIDAL AND GROWTH-REGULATING C HEMICALS, ARE PREPARED USING AS THE EMULSIFYING AGENT A HYDROCARBYLOXY POLYALKYLENE GLYCOL-ESTERIFIED POLYMER OF STYRENE AND MALEIC ANHYDRIDE, E.G. A METHOXY POLYETHYLENE GLYCOL-ESTERIFIED POLYMER OF STYRENE AND MALEIC ANHYDRIDE. THE EMULSIFYING AGENT IS EFFECTIVE EVEN WHEN PRESENT IN VERY MINOR AMOUNTS, E.G. ABOUT 0.01 TO 0.3 PARTS BY WEIGHT OF THE AGENT PER PART OF THE HORTICULTURAL CHEMICAL. MOREOVER, THE COMPOSITIONS LEAVE LITTLE OR NO VISIBLE DEPOSIT ON THE PLANT LIFE TO WHICH THEY ARE APPLIED. PARTICULARLY SUITABLE HORTICULTURAL CHEMICALS ARE TOBACCO DESUCKERING AGENTS SUCH AS PETROLEUM MINERALS OILS, FATTY ACID ESTERS, LONG-CHAIN ALIPHATIC ALDEHYDES, AND LONG-CHAIN ALIPHATIC ALCOHOLS.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method for determining whether a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine is compression sound. The method involves removing individual combustion chambers from service, determining the exhaust gas carbon monoxide concentration with individual chambers removed from service and comparing these carbon monoxide concentrations. An individual combustion chamber is compression unsound if the exhaust gas carbon monoxide concentration with it removed from service is substantially less than the maximum carbon monoxide concentration obtained with any other combustion chamber removed from service. Also disclosed is a method for balancing the air-fuel composition supplied to different banks of combustion chambers. This method involves removing from service one combustion chamber from each bank, analyzing the engine exhaust gases for carbon monoxide with the chamber removed from service and comparing these carbon monoxide concentrations. A balanced air-fuel composition is supplied to different banks of combustion chambers when the exhaust gas carbon monoxide concentrations obtained by removing one chamber from each bank are substantially the same.

Abstract: 1333786 Styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer salts in rug shampoo compositions ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO 30 Oct 1970 [17 Nov 1969] 51830/70 Heading C3P [Also in Division C5] A rug shampoo composition, suitable for cleaning rugs, carpets and upholstery, comprises a detergent and an additive which is a watersoluble salt of a styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer or partial ester thereof which is present in an amount of from 5 to 95% by weight of the total solids content of the composition and is of a nature such that the dry residue of the shampoo is embrittled. The weight ratio of copolymer to detergent can vary from 1 : 19 to 19 : 1 and is preferably between 1 : 1 and 1 : 7. The compositions can also contain a foam builder or stabilizer, generally used in an amount of 5-75% by weight, preferably 10-35%, of the total solids. The composition is generally formulated as a concentrated aqueous solution containing 30-95% by weight of water and used as a more dilute solution containing 0À5- 3%, preferably 1%, by weight of solids. In addition to water the compositions may include minor amounts of water-soluble alcohols, and silicates or other alkaline builders, e.g. phosphates, grease or oil solvents, sequestrants, viscosity builders and optical brighteners. The copolymers are described for example in U.S. Patent No. 3,388,106. They have about 1 to 4 moles of styrene per mole of maleic anhydride and molecular weights of 600 to 50,000, preferred respective amounts being 1 to 3 moles per mole and 700-5000. Suitable copolymer salts are the metal, ammonia and amine salts, particularly the ammonium salts, which are prepared by heating aqueous solutions of the copolymers with NH 4 OH. Preferred partial esters are the C 1-18 alkanol, e.g. n-propyl, and cycloalkanol, e.g. cyclohexyl, half-esters. Preferred detergents are the water-soluble ammonia, amine and metal salts of fatty alkyl sulphates or alkyl ethoxylated sulphates, N- acyl-sarcosines and N-acyl-sarcosinates, e.g. sodium and magnesium lauryl sulphates and sodium lauroyl sarcosinate. Preferred foam builders are alkanolamides, alkylamides, sulphosuccinates and amphoteric cycloimidines. In examples the effectiveness of the present compositions in the cleansing of carpets and, particularly, the effect of this cleansing on the resoiling characteristics of the carpets are compared with the results obtained using similar compositions that do not contain the copolymer salts. The present compositions leave very birttle, non-tacky residues which are usually easily removed when dry and generally make little, if any, contribution to resoiling, in marked contrast to the prior art compositions not containing the polymer salts.
