Abstract: A process is disclosed for the manufacture of arylalkyl mercaptans, alkyl mercaptans or mixtures thereof by reacting the corresponding halide of said mercaptans with an alkali metal hydrogen sulfide in an aqueous, organic solvent-free solution, at an inert, low elevated pressure atmosphere of hydrogen sulfide, at an elevated temperature not exceeding 115°C, and in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst.
