Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inflator apparatus wherein molecular weight of mixed gas contained therein is manipulated, by varying relative amounts of various constituents thereof. SOLUTION: Through such manipulation and tight control of mixed gas molecular weight, performance of the inflator can be properly tuned so as to desirably control or influence a speed of deployment of an associated airbag cushion, and minimize or reduce damage to the associated airbag cushion caused by an excessive deployment speed, as well as satisfy the relatively onerous inflation demands required for proper or desired operation of various close proximity airbag cushions or inflatable restraint devices.
