Abstract: The air bag vehicle occupant restraint system includes a resilient cover having a front wall defining first tear lines rupturable upon expansion of the air bag to form first and second rectangular hinged doors through which the bag expands. Each of the doors have edges displaced inwardly from outer margins of the front wall, and rearwardly extending sidewalls surrounding the front wall to enclose the unexpanded bag. The improvement comprises first and second pairs of secondary arcuate tear lines extending from the first tear lines to the outer margin, thereby forming door hinges which allow full swinging motion of the doors.

Abstract: A membrane horn switch has a flexible thin front plate and a rigid, thick back-plate. The plates are coated with a conductive layer which are separated by dielectric material applied to either or both plates. The plates are attached together around their perimeters using a pressure sensitive adhesive. The switch is attached directly to an airbag cover, eliminating the need for external backing other than that which is provided by the rigid back-plate of the switch.
