Abstract: An optical monitoring system provides for out-of-band calibration. As a result, calibration can be performed simultaneously with monitoring. This can be used to accomplish faster and/or more accurate scanning. In addition, the need for complex switching and/or multiplexing capabilities can be avoided. The system comprises a signal source of an optical signal having spectrally separated channels, which are distributed within a spectral band, such as a WDM signal. A reference source generates a reference signal outside of the spectral band. A tunable filter filters the optical signal and the reference signal. A reference signal detector then detects the filtered reference signal, while an optical signal detector detects the filtered optical signal.

Abstract: A semiconductor optical amplifier system (100) comprises a hermetic package (112). In the typical implementation, this hermetic package (112) is a standard butterfly, DIP or miniDIL package. An optical bench (116) is sealed within this package (112). A first fiber pigtail (118) enters this package via a feed-through to connect to the bench (116) and terminate above the bench. A second optical fiber pigtail (120) enters the package (112) via a second fiber feed-through to connect to the bench (116) and similarly terminate above the bench. A semiconductor amplifier chip (102) is connected to the bench (116) to provide amplification. Isolators (128, 130) are further incorporated along with a monitoring diode (126) to yield a fully integrated system.

Abstract: A monitoring system has the capability to monitor multiple signal bands simultaneously. Specifically, in one embodiment, the monitoring system can simultaneously monitor the C- and L-bands. As a result, the time to scan through the spectral band can be reduced by half. The system comprises a signal source for an optical signal having spectrally separated channels distributed within a first spectral band and a second spectral band. A tunable filter filters this optical signal. A dichroic filter separates the first spectral band from the second spectral band in the optical signal, which has been filtered by the tunable filter. Thereafter, first and second optical detectors detect the respective spectral bands in the filtered optical signal.

Abstract: A channel monitoring system has improved the spectral filtering accuracy by using a tunable filter system that transmits the optical signal through serial filter cavities. This has the effect of dramatically narrowing the filter's transfer function. Moreover, it improves side mode rejection. Abstract: A scanning optical monitoring system and method are appropriate for high speed scanning of a WDM signal band. The system and method are able to identify dropped channels or, more generally, discrepancies between the determined or detected channel inventory and a perpetual inventory for the WDM signal, which perpetual inventory specifies the channels that should be present in the WDM signal assuming proper operation of the network. The system includes a tunable optical filter (110) that scans a pass band across a signal band of a WDM signal (10) to generate a filtered signal (114). A photodetector (116) then generates an electrical signal (118) in response to this filtered signal. A decision circuit (130) compares the electrical signal to a threshold and a controller (150), which is responsive to the decision circuit, inventories the channels in the WDM signal (10).
