Abstract:
A urinary catheter (30, 100) for indwelling introduction into a patient's urethra. The catheter includes an elongated flexible body portion (12) formed of a polymer. The elongated flexible body portion (12) includes a flexible introducing member. The flexible introducing member (32) has a longitudinal bore. The bore can slideably position the introducing member (32) along the flexible body portion. A flexible polymeric sleeve (40) is affixed to the flexible introducing member. The flexible polymeric sleeve (40) can cover a substantial portion of the flexible body portion (12). The method and apparatus can minimize the likelihood of infection by proving a sterile sleeve barrier on the catheter.
Abstract:
A continuous Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) estimation system may include a Foley catheter, a continuous urine creatinine sensor, and a urine output monitor. The continuous GFR estimation system computes creatinine clearance as CrCl=(Ucr×Uvol)/Pcr×Tmin), where Ucr is urine creatinine in mg/dL, Uvol is urine volume in mL, Pcr is plasma (serum) creatinine in mg/dL, and Tmin is time in minutes. A Foley catheter may be used to withdraw urine from the bladder. The urine may be delivered to a urine output monitor that provides the Uvol value over a time Tmin. Attached to the catheter is the flow-through continuous urine creatinine sensor for providing the Ucr value. The remaining parameter is Pcr. Because serum creatinine levels do not change rapidly over time, a blood sample may be withdrawn prior to the start of the continuous GFR to obtain the Pcr value.
Abstract:
The present disclosure relates to a packaged urinary catheter assembly and method of making and using the packaged urinary catheter assembly. The urinary catheter assembly includes a urinary catheter having a proximal end and a distal end. The distal end includes at least one aperture for receiving fluid from a patient. The urinary catheter is contained within a sleeve having a length, a width, and a size configured to receive the catheter. According to one embodiment, the urinary catheter and the sleeve may be arranged in a helical coil. The outer surface of the urinary catheter may have a lubricious and/or an antimicrobial coating.
