    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To thermally decompose N2O by a minimun fuel consumption at a low cost by a method wherein an N2O-containing gas is supplied into a regenerative heat exchanger or the like, the gas to be reacted is heated at a temperature within a specific range, the contained N2O is thermally decomposed, and thereafter a cleaned gas is cooled by thermally exchanging between the purified gas and the gas to be reacted or the like. SOLUTION: A regenerative heat exchanger is constituted as a fixed bed while, for example, a gas stream direction is reversed cyclically. Then, for the fixed bed a reaction area (a high temperature area) is firstly heated at 800 deg.C-1000 deg.C. Thereafter an N2O-containing gas is supplied to the fixed bed, it is heated by thermal exchange to decompose N2O, a reaction heat is emitted, and an inactive substance bed and the gas are heated. In this case since, an introduced gas cools an inlet area of the regenerator, and a high temperature area transfers in an outlet direction of an reactor, the fixed bed being in the outlet direction is warmed by the gas heated by exothermic reaction, and simultaneously the gas is cooled. Therefore, in order to prevent completely the fixed bed from being cooled, the gas stream direction is reversed after a specific time has elapsed.
