Abstract: The formation of an emulsion when working up reaction mixtures containing butyraldehydes and cobalt is avoided by a treatment with gases containing molecular oxygen in an aqueous acid medium at an elevated temperature, at least twice the amount of molecular oxygen stoichiometrically required for the oxidation of the cobalt being used per gram atom of cobalt present in the oxoreaction mixture.

Abstract: 1,172,761. Oxo process. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 4 April, 1967 [5 April, 1966], No. 15381/67. Heading C2C. Process for decobalting a crude oxo reaction mixture containing aldehydes and cobalt by treating the mixture after it has been produced with an oxidizing agent for cobalt carbonyl at a temperature of more than 100‹ C. and immediately after it is produced in an aqueous acid medium and subsequently separting the aqueous phase containing cobalt salts from the treated oxo reaction mixture. Oxidizing agents may be hydrogen peroxide, oxygen or a gas containing molecular oxygen. The treatment may be carried out using an aqueous acid medium preferably having a pH of 2 to 6 containing an inorganic or organic acid e.g. fatty acids such as formic, acetic or butyric acid.
