Abstract: AN IMPROVED PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ALDEHYDES AND ALCOHOLS BY THE OXO PROCESS BY REACTION OF OLEFINICALLY UNSATURATED COMPOUNDS WITH CARBON MONOXIDE AND HYDROGEN IN THE PRESENCE OF COBALT CARBONYL COMPOUNDS AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURE AND SUPERATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE IN WHICH THE REACTANTS ARE INTRODUCED INTO THE REACTION ZONE AT HIGH SPEED. THE IMPROVEMENT CONSISTS IN INTRODUCING THE REACTANTS INTO A MIXING ZONE EXTENDING IN THE DIRECTION OF ENTRY OF THE REACTANTS, THE MIXING ZONE HAVING A DIAMETER HICH IS TWICE TO FIFTY TIMES THE MEANS DIAMETER OF THE STREAM OF REACTANTS SUPPLIED AND THE LENGTH OF THE MIXING ZONE BEING FROM THERE TO THIRTY TIMES ITS HYDRAULIC DIAMETER.

Abstract: The formation of an emulsion when working up reaction mixtures containing butyraldehydes and cobalt is avoided by a treatment with gases containing molecular oxygen in an aqueous acid medium at an elevated temperature, at least twice the amount of molecular oxygen stoichiometrically required for the oxidation of the cobalt being used per gram atom of cobalt present in the oxoreaction mixture.

Process for decobalting a crude oxo reaction mixture containing aldehydes and cobalt by treating the mixture after it has been produced with an oxidizing agent for cobalt carbonyl at a temperature of more than 100‹ C. and immediately after it is produced in an aqueous acid medium and subsequently separting the aqueous phase containing cobalt salts from the treated oxo reaction mixture. Oxidizing agents may be hydrogen peroxide, oxygen or a gas containing molecular oxygen. The treatment may be carried out using an aqueous acid medium preferably having a pH of 2 to 6 containing an inorganic or organic acid e.g. fatty acids such as formic, acetic or butyric acid.
