Abstract: A novel method of producing acrolein and/or acrylic acid by heterogeneous catalyzed gas phase oxidation of propane, by using two consecutive, stationary beds of catalysts based on different multimetal oxides, and a starting gas mixture containing \- 50 vol.% propane, \- 15 vol.% oxygen and 0 - 35 vol.% inert gas. A mixture of propane, oxygen and optionally inert gas is passed over two stationary catalyst beds at 300 - 500 deg C. The beds are based on different multimetal oxides (A and B) are used. The starting gas mixture contains \- 50 vol.% propane, \- 15 vol.% oxygen and 0 - 35 vol.% inert gas is passed through the catalyst bed A and then B. The active material of the catalyst beds is multimetal oxide(s) of formula (I) in bed A and multimetal oxide(s) of formula (II) in bed B; M aMo1-bM bOx (I) Bia'Mob'X c'X d'X e'X f'X g'X h'Ox' (II) M = cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu) and/or tin (Sn); M = tungsten (W), vanadium (V), tellurium (Te), niobium (Nb), phosphorus (P), chromium (Cr), iron (Fe), antimony (Sb), cerium (Ce) and/or lanthanum (La); X = W, V and/or Te; X = alkaline earth metal, Co, Ni, Zn, Mn, Cu, cadmium (Cd), Sn and/or mercury (Hg); X = Fe, Cr and/or Ce; X = P, arsenic (As), Sb and/or boron (B); X = alkali metal, thallium (Tl) and/or Sn; X = a rare earth metal, titanium (Ti), zirconium (Zr), Nb, tantalum (Ta), rhenium (Re), ruthenium (Ru), rhodium (Rh), silver (Ag), gold (Au), aluminum (Al), gallium (In), silicon (Si), germanium (Ge), thorium (Th) and/or uranium (U); a = 0.5 - 1.5; b = 0 - 0.5; a' = 0.01 - 8; b' = 0.1 - 30; c' = 0.1 - 20; d', e' = 0 - 20; f' = 0 - 6; g' = 0 - 4; h' = 0 - 15; x, x' = a number, depending on the valency and content of elements other than oxygen.

Abstract: Heterogeneous, catalytic, gas-phase oxidation of propane to acrolein and/or acrylic acid comprises passing a mixture of propane, oxygen and optionally an inert gas, at 300-500 deg C, over a two-part fixed-bed catalyst, each part containing different, specific mixed metal oxide phases. The catalyst in the first bed (A) has the formula M a Mo1-bM b Ox (I) M = cobalt, nickel, magnesium, manganese and/or copper; M = wolfram, vanadium, tellurium, niobium, phosphorus, chromium, iron, antimony, cerium, tin and/or lanthanum; a = 0.5-1.5; b = 0-0.5; x = a number required to satisfy the valencies of the other components and the catalyst in the second bed (B) has formula Bia,Mob, X c, X d, X e, X f, X g, X h, Ox, (II) X = wolfram, vanadium and/or tellurium; X = alkaline earth metal, cobalt, nickel, zinc, manganese, copper, cadmium, tin and/or mercury; X = iron, chromium and/or cerium; X = phosphorus, arsenic, antimony and/or boron; X = alkali metal, thallium and/or tin; X = rare earth metal, titanium, zirconium, niobium, tantalum, rhenium, ruthenium, rhodium, silver, gold, aluminum, gallium, indium, silicon, germanium, thorium and/or uranium; a' = 0.01-8; b' = 0.1-30; c', d' and e' = 0-20; f' = 0-6; g' = 0-4; h' = 0-15 The starting mixture of reactants contains at least 5 volume % propane, at least 15 volume % oxygen and 0-35 volume % inert gas and it passes through layer A first, then through B.
