Abstract: Micro-suspension polymers are obtained by dispersing a mixture of radically-polymerizable monomers with isocyanate-reactive groups, monomers without such groups, diphenyl-ethene or -ethane and blocked polyisocyanate in water in presence of protective colloid and then polymerizing in presence of a radical initiator. A method for the production of micro-suspension polymers involves: (1) dispersion of a mixture of (A1) 0.1-60 wt.% radically-polymerizable monomer(s) with isocyanate-reactive functional group(s), (A2) 40-99.9 wt% radically-polymerizable comonomer(s) without NCO-reactive groups, (A3) 0-20 wt.% 1,1-diphenylethene or 1,1-diphenylethane and (A4) 0.1-100 wt.% blocked polyisocyanate(s) in water in presence of a protective colloid, to give a dispersion with an average particle diameter (d50) of 0.08-100 microns, followed by (2) polymerisation of the droplets to a conversion of at least 50 wt.% in presence of 0.1-20 wt.% radical initiator(s) (amounts based on the total wt. of A1 and A2, taken as 100 wt.%). Independent claims are also included for: (a) micro-suspension polymers (I) or dispersions, made by this method; (b) fibres, molded products, film or varnish obtained from (I) or their dispersions; (c) a method for varnishing or coating substrates by coating with a dispersion of (I), drying and heating to above 80 deg C.
